Identification and boundary parameterization of reaction-diffusion ecological models

This presentation concerns modelling aspects of aquatic systems, in particular the study of the Serra da Mesa lake. We discuss issues of parameter identification and we also address the problem of parameterizing the boundary data for reaction-diffusion partial differential equationsthat models the dynamics of the lake. The boundaries are modeled as fast oscillating periodic structures and are endowed with Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. Using techniques from homogenization theory and multiple-scale analysis we derive the effective equation and boundary conditions that are satisfied by the homogenized solution. The work discussed here involves a long term collaboration project between IMPA and the University of Siena with the participation of Chiara Mocenni, Antonio Vicino and Emiliano Sparacino.
